When it comes to buying saltwater flyfishing gear there is one thing
you should consider.
The fly rod is more important than the fly reel. If you buy a really
cheap rod it will have very slow action
and will make it difficult to cast for any distance and will be even
worse at throwing larger flies or when it is windy.
I use a Penn Gold Medal fly rod 10 wt. for Snook, Redfish, Seatrout,
Permit, Bonefish, and even caught
many monster Bonita with it ( False Albacore, Little Tuny ). I fish
the dock light at night and have yanked
some large shouldered Snook out of the barnacle encrusted pilings without
any problems. I also like to cast
as big of a fly as I can when I flyfish. The Penn Gold Medal
fly rod is light, fast and strong.
The Penn Gold Medal fly rod retails under $200.00.
I am going to talk to you about Fly Lines now because this is the one
place you do not want to
skimp. The fly line is so important to make fly fishing more fun and
less work.
I like to use the Scientific Anglers Ultra 3 Bonefish and Tarpon
tapers. These lines are the best I have ever used.
They load quick and shoot like a dream. Unless you like to make allot
of useless false cast you need these
lines. If you are in and area where it is not hot, or at colder times
of the year I would suggest that
you use the Scientific Anglers Ultra 3 Saltwater Taper instead
of the Bonefish or Tarpon Tapers.
These lines run about $50.00 and will be the best $50.00 you can spend.
There are so many saltwater fly reels now that you can go dizzy checking
all of them out!
You can also get dizzy looking at some of the prices!
For getting started in saltwater flyfishing you can't beat the Scientific
Angler System 2 fly reels.
They have good drag systems and handle any saltwater species you can
catch.
This is KEY with any saltwater fly reel you can buy..........RINSE
IT OUT EVERY TIME YOU USE IT!
If you take care of you reel and rod they will last a long time.
The Scientific Angler System 2 fly reels run from $150 to $200.
